Preflight

Upon receipt of all the components of your job, our preflight specialists review your files using a text and cover checklist. The PDF of these forms can be downloaded by clicking below.

Prior to entering your job into the production schedule, we review your files to make sure all necessary components have been included, that the disk is readable, the files properly constructed and that all instructions and requests are clearly understood. We urge you to use the checklists to preflight your own job as a self-check to ensure that you and your vendors submit all the pieces needed. We also suggest that you enter pertinent job information on these forms, print and then submit them with your job. These serve as an introduction and quick reference for your job as it travels through the plant. By completing each section, you give us specific information as to your intentions regarding your book.

Page files. McNaughton & Gunn prefers to receive final PDF files for text. For instructions on how to create PDF files please click on the link below entitled PDF Files or contact a Preflight Specialist for assistance.

 If you are not providing PDF files, then the text should be provided in Adobe PageMaker, Quark Xpress or Adobe InDesign. Be sure that  you have assembled all the elements of your job: the text, the art, etc. Also, please note that although we do accept application files, you will incur additional charges due to the fact that we must produce PDF files from the application files. 

In addition, our process will be more streamlined and time efficient if you provide fewer files with larger page ranges. We must open each file, generate the postscript/PDF and close each file. The preflight process can require a matter of hours rather than minutes if you compare the job submitted as one hundred-seventy-five one-page files or one file of one-hundred-seventy-five pages. You may be charged if we handle an excessive amount of files.

Support files. These include scanned images and art created on the computer in a program such as Adobe Illustrator, Macromedia FreeHand or CorelDraw. If your drawing program does not create self-opening EPS files, please include the original file created in the drawing application. Please do not save scanned images as EPS files in Photoshop with halftone screen or transfer function options selected. Tiff images should also be saved without LZW compression.

 
Fonts. Screen and printer fonts used both for the pages and in the graphics must be included to image your job correctly.
Laser proofs:
It is very important to include a complete set of actual-size laser proofs which represent the latest and final saved version of your files. We can then compare our output to what you have created and expect to see from us. Make sure to mark placed art as FPO (for position only) if we are to replace the image with a high resolution scan.

For covers and other color work, we prefer that you provide a color proof. If you do not have access to a color printer, please provide a composite laser proof at actual size. (This may require ‘tiling’ two or more sheets of paper together.) The proof should either be marked for color breaks (on a tissue overlay or on the laser proof itself) or a set of color-separated laser prints (at a reduced size if needed) should be supplied.
