Our Capabilities Up Close

The cover sells the book

The fact is people do judge a book by its cover. So why not let your cover stand out?

McNaughton & Gunn has the ability to create eye-catching covers. We take your design and bring it to life with color and finishing techniques.

Choose from gloss, matte and textured finishes. Or make your cover pop with a matte etched finish. Try embossing, debossing, foil stamping, flaps and rounded corners. Whatever option you choose we've got you covered. See below for a brief explanation of the special treatments available through McNaughton & Gunn.

In addition we remain loyal to our EarthCare commitment by offering FSC certified 10 pt and 12 pt cover stocks as well as FSC certified insert and dust jacket stock. That means you can enjoy top quality cover materials while knowing that they come from well-managed forests.

Coatings and Finishes

Gloss Film Lamination - Applied in a seperate process, the high gloss finish helps prevent curling and is highly durable and scuff resistant. This process is a good solution for protecting heavy ink coverage of dark colors.

Matte Film Lamination – Applied in a separate process, the non-reflective, dull finish helps prevent curling and is durable and scuff-resistant. The application works best for pastels and light colors. Dark colors will show scuff marks more readily. Shrink wrapping is highly recommended to avoid scuffing during shipping.

Gloss UV Coating- Applied in a separate process, this glossy finish is a liquid laminate bonded and cured with ultraviolet light. Although it is a more economical solution than lamination, it is not as durable.

Matte UV Coating- Applied in a separate process, this non-reflective, dull finish is a liquid laminate bonded and cured with ultraviolet light. Although it is a more economical solution than lamination, it is not as durable.

Gloss Varnish - Applied on press, this thin coating provides a glossy finish for protection. It is a less durable product than lamination and UV coating.

Matte Varnish - Applied on press, this thin coating provides a non-reflective, dull finish for protection. It is a less durable product than lamination and UV coating.

Aqueous Coating – Applied on press, this water based application is the most economical coating but not the most durable.

Matte Etching – Combines the durability of gloss film lamination and a matte coating that is scuff resistant while offering a method to highlight graphics and/or titles as a spot process.

Foil Stamping – Pressing a design onto a book cover using metal foil, colored foil or ink.

Embossing - A process performed after printing to stamp a raised image into the paper surface.

Debossing - A process performed after printing in which an image is pressed down into paper surface.

Cambric Weave Lamination – Provides texture without the expense of cloth while giving the strength of lamination.

Round Cornering - A process that rounds off the hard angle corners of the book.
